Legal Status

Midwives in Ontario are primary care providers for pregnancy, labour and birth and the first six weeks after birth. Midwifery is covered in legislation that sets out the provisions for many health professionals in Ontario. The College of Midwives of Ontario (CMO) sets our standards and education requirements for Registered midwives. All of our midwives are registered and follow standards set forth by the CMO. These standards include specific conditions in mother and infant care for which midwives must seek a medical consultation. Pertinent documents are included in this package. The Ontario Ministry of Health publicly funds midwifery care and there is no charge to any client whether they have an Ontario Health card or not. Women who do not have OHIP coverage may need to pay for lab work and hospital fees out of pocket. Please speak to your midwife about this.
